MAMMOTH WEED WIZARD BASTARD ~ Y PROFFWYD DWYLL .... review

Just nine months after the release of their debut album "Noeth AC AnoethWelsh cosmonauts Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard return with yet another slice of psych drenched, spaced out doom with second opus "Y Proffwyd Dwyll". on New Heavy Sounds

"Y Proffwyd Dwyll" is the second instalment in an ongoing trilogy of  theme-based albums and sees MWWB weaving into the space/doom fabrics of their sound elements of ambient psych and prog complexity, elements enhanced by the addition to their sonic cannon of  Moog synthesisers and cello. Those that are expecting something akin to the 30 minute plus jams of the first albums epic centrepiece " Nachthexen" may be disappointed to discover that the songs on "Y Proffwyd Dwyll" are of a much shorter length, but that disappointment will soon dissipate when realising that with the shorter running times comes a sharper focus on ideas and vision. Dominated by heavy guitar riffage and thundering rhythms surrounded by washes of Moog colouring , the six songs that make up "Y Proffwyd Dwyll" see the band fusing elements of Ufomammut-like heavy psych with swirling Hawkwind-esque space rock   Over these sonic grooves of substantial heaviness sit the haunting tones of vocalist/bassist Jessica Ball her haunting voice the polar opposite of the heavyweight grooves surrounding her, sweet and fragile they sit atop the doom laden metallic bluster beneath them like cream on a razor blades edge giving the album a balance of beauty and brutality that is truly startling.
